Digestive & GI Playbooks
GERD, IBS, and digestive conditions—new 2024 rating criteria and PTSD secondary tactics.
Digestive & GI Playbooks
Navigate the new May 2024 digestive system rating criteria and build evidence that satisfies 38 CFR § 4.114.
The VA updated digestive condition ratings in May 2024—creating a new diagnostic code for GERD (DC 7206) and clarifying IBS criteria (DC 7319). Most importantly, veterans can now get separate ratings for both conditions.
Whether you are claiming direct service connection, secondary to PTSD through the gut-brain axis, or using the Gulf War presumptive path for IBS, these playbooks show what evidence to gather and how to present it.

FAQ
Can I get separate ratings for GERD and IBS?
Yes, after May 19, 2024 veterans can receive separate ratings under DC 7206 (GERD) and DC 7319 (IBS) as long as symptoms don't completely overlap. This is a major change from the old rules.
Is GERD a Gulf War presumptive condition?
No. GERD is classified as a "structural" disease and does not qualify under 38 CFR 3.317. However, IBS IS a Gulf War presumptive condition. For GERD, pursue direct or secondary service connection.
